During the years of the communist regime, Alexander Petrov and his wife Maria form part of the actors of the theatre company that work in the well-known National Theatre of the country.
In the middle of an important show, under the careful watch and rigid control of government authorities, María can’t control a nervous crisis and publicly breaks, fiercely criticising the politics of the regime. Her outrageous speech calls the attention of the State’s security agents, bringing terrible consequences: despite the pleas of her husband to his friend Viktor Markov (Hristo Shopov), who is a prominent member of national security, Maria is sent to an asylum and the actor himself is forced to abandon his career and all forms of public life. His only, miserable option to survive is to work in an undertakers business.
Now in the present, after the fall of communism, Alexander manages to be reinstated in the theatrical world, but when he reappears on stage he is again hit by news that he could never have imagined: he discovers that he was betrayed by the person he most admired, his mentor and friend. The surprising revelation comes during that man's funeral, just when Petrov must decide the rites for him.
Things have changed in the country and those who were heads of the regime have now become prominent businessmen. Amongst them is Markov himself, who directs the idea of founding a political movement, led by someone close to the people.
Petrov, in his unstable situation, disheartened and without hope that his wife might recover her health, will be this leader. His friend Markov, convinced of his talent, will ask him to lead this new political party so that he can contribute to the salvation of a country that has chosen the wrong path.
