‘STAND BY”: Hristo Shopov’s first film as a director and producer

"STAND BY": A FILM DIRECTED BY HRISTO SHOPOV

Image

For the first time, actor Hristo Shopov swaps role in the shooting of a film, by getting behind the camera and directing the film entitled ‘STAND BY’.

Hristo is also producer and scriptwriter of this film that takes the form of a documentary intensely dedicated to a sport which is thrilling but not well-known in Bulgaria, called IPSC, or ‘Dinamichna Strelva” in Bulgarian.

With this documentary-film, the viewer learns of all types of issues that are involved in this type of shooting sport, such as what the sport consists of, training, who can practice it, rules, the culture of respect and responsibility towards firearms, its practice in Bulgaria, etc.

IPSC earned official recognition as a sport in our country in 2005 and has been one of the biggest growing types of sport here in recent years. Proof of that are the champions (of both sexes) that we have in official competitions at national and international level.

Following the great sucess of the show “The Man from Earth” in Burgas, Varna and Dobrich, Hristo Shopov continues his national tour with a piece titled “Same Time, Next Year” . This theatrical production written in 1975 by Bernard Slader, won in its time an uncountable number of awards and has been performed more than 1400 on Broadway.

This will also sound familiar to the Bulgarian audience as there have been several memorable performances of this piece in the country.

Now, Hristo Shopov and Lilia Maravilia are faced with the challenge of bringing to life the characters George and Doris. The two clearly talented actors with a more than respectable career behind them are performing this piece for the first time in other cities besides Sofia. Their masterful interpretation of the story, which is seemingly trivial, will without a doubt excite the audience when they discover the passionate adventure which runs through the profound labyrinth of the human soul.

One of these stories which entrances us from beginning to end, leaving us breathless and desperate to know more with every minute that passes.

The plot revolves around John Oldman, a professor of an American university, who hosts his farewell party at his house with his fellow professors of the university who are surprised by his sudden decision to abandon a stable job and what appeared to be a comfortable lifestyle.

EXCITEMENT AND PRESENTS AT CHRISTMAS FOR HOSPITALISED KIDS

Due to the proximity of the Christmas period, the so-called ‘Christmas Spirit’ event took place on the 17th December 2015 in the Specialised Hospital for Active Treatment in Paediatrics in Sofia. This action was organised as part of the national initiative ‘Endless Stories’, which has as an essential objective to improve the hospital stay of the kids that find themselves in these centres.

The key idea of this event was none other than to create a festive atmosphere between the kids troubled by a disease, their parents and the hospital staff. A very special atmosphere was created to entertain the young patients, in which various Christmas decorations and objects were used, which the staff from any hospital room could use and share.

The official opening of this warm-hearted, beautiful act had the presence of Dr Daniela Daritkova (President of the Health Commjission of the 43rd National Assembly), Prof Dr Vladimir Pilosof (President of the Bulgarian Academy of Pediatrics) and Prof Radka Tinchev (Head of the clinic in the University Infant Hospital).

The special guest at the event was the actor Hristo Shopov. Hristo, as well as other actors from the ‘Sirius’ theatre and Encho Danilov/Uncle Encho, took charge of lifting the mood of the kids, as well as everyone decorating the typical Christmas tree together. Lastly, the hospitalised kids received presents from Santa Claus in person.

The national initiative ‘Endless Stories’ was introduced in Bulgaria in November 2012. By organising activities like reading, music, theatre and different celebrations the aim is that as many young people as possible in society can get better sooner or in a shorter period. It also contributes to strengthening the emotional link between parents, children and doctors.

So far the programme includes 14 hospitals in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Pleven and Rousse. Since the start of this initiative in the country until now, the entertainers that have given their support have contributed to improving the emotional state of almost 9000 hospitalised kids. In the Specialised Hospital for Active Treatment in Paediatrics alone there have been almost 150 visits reaching more than 1100 young patients.

THE PETROV FILE: A drama between theater and politics

“THE PETROV FILE”: RELEASE DATE - 6th MARCH 2015.

During the last few years of Communism in Bulgaria, a theatre actor, Alexander Petrov, is prohibited from acting for unknown reasons.

After the fall of the regime, when he reappears on stage, he realises he was betrayed by the person he most admired, his mentor and friend. The surprising revelation comes during that man's funeral, just when Petrov must decide the rites for him. Disheartened, Petrov abandons all forms of public life.

To face this complicated situation he gets help from his friend Markov, a former chief of the Secret Service and now a prominent businessman. It is 1994/95, the fierce years of capitalism, in the midst of raging violence between several groups.

Markov, deeply convinced of Petrov's talent, urges him to lead a new political party able to help save a country that has chosen the wrong path.

The story cames from the mind of the legendary and well-known screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière, whose trophy cabinet boasts awards as coveted as an Oscar, a Cesar, a Palme d'Or, a Golden Lion, etc.

Image

The story of “The Man from Earth” was conceived by Jerome Bixby in the early 1960s and was completed on his death bed in April 1998, making it his final piece of work.

The plot focuses on Professor John Oldman, a scientist who summons a group of associates to a cabin one freezing night, and strikes them with a fantastic revelation: he is not a traditional human, but a 14,000 year-old immortal, who has survived centuries of evolution from the Cro-Magnon Era to the present.

In the hours to follow, Professor Oldman's earth-shaking assertion about himself challenges the men on spiritual, scientific and historical levels. But the most incredible is yet to come - an even more astonishing truth in which the men's discussions culminate.

ASYLUM: The Eyes are the Windows to the Soul

“The Eyes are the Windows to the Soul” is the tagline of this horror movie, in which Hristo Shopov plays Father Richard.

An eleven-person riot squad races to an insane asylum to quell a recent inmate outbreak and hostage situation.

They arrive, only to be caught off guard by a sudden barrage of insane patients.

When they've finally fought off a wave, two of their squad members are missing, their communications return only static, and the doors are locked. They're trapped.

They break up into three teams to track down the lost members. Strange sounds and religious iconography suggest something beyond insanity has taken over the inmates.

Sure enough, a simple rescue mission quickly morphs into relentless life or death battles with the possessed.

When McGahey, a trained, rational hostage negotiator, discovers the ringleader of this possessed insanity is none other than his brother, it falls on him to stop nothing less than the opening of a portal to Hell.

This film is directed by Todor Chapkanov.

Stars: Stephen Rea, Hristo Shopov, Bruce Payne, Steve Toussaint, Valentin Ganev and Radoslav Ignatov.

BARABBAS: Star production for Easter 2013.

The channel RAI UNO chooses "BARABAS" as it’s star premiere for Easter 2013.

Image
"BARABAS" is an international co-production, filmed in Tunisia, and set during the first century, when the Roman Empire was in full domination.

The plot revolves around the well known criminal and thief Barabas, a New Testament character who was acquitted by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate as a result of the wishes of the Hebrew crowd, who instead wanted the crucifixion of Jesus.

A first approach to this film was developed in the previous Roma Fiction Festival. "BARABAS", directed by Roger Young and produced by Leone Cinematografica in collaboration with the American ReelzChannel, is based on the work of Nobel prize winner Par Lagerkvist.

In words of the director, "BARABAS" "is the story of a murderer who finds God in the last moments of his life. A man desperately seeking evidence of God’s existence who had abondoned his faith."

Alongside Hristo Shopov the cast includes Billy Zane, Cristina Capotondi and Anna Valle.
